98 - Mountain Climber

I have been climbing a mountain for the last 9 years.
I was 17 when I began this journey.

Only I didn’t start at the bottom.
I began beneath the surface.
It took me a while just to get to the baseline.

Although now I have come really far.
People who didn’t know me then
don’t understand the relentless
determination it took to arrive here now.

And not many people really know
the way I have always walked along the edge.
Just a step away from tumbling back down.
And yes, I did trip and stumble many times.
But my baseline began to rise each time I climbed higher.
But still I felt I had to be painfully careful.

It’s only in these last few weeks that I discovered something
I had been missing all along.

I don’t have to walk this way
when there is an entire path with open space.
I just couldn’t see it
because I was so focused
on not falling off the edge.
